COMPANHIA DAS LEZÍRIAS

The history of Companhia das Lezírias begins in June 1836, during the reign of D. Maria II, but it was in 1881 that,
with the planting of the first vineyard, the wine-growing activity began.
Since then, the vision, effort and work of many have contributed to make it a reference for the region and the
country.
In 2018, in honor of Cincinato da Costa, a vineyard was planted using the same varieties he had once chosen, in the installation of a vineyard under his responsibility at Companhia das Lezirias.
Bernardino Cincinato da Costa, an unavoidable personality in the history of vineyards and wine in Portugal, was director between 1905 and 1930, during which time he studied and published the guide to Portuguese grape varieties.
The 140 hectares of vineyards belonging to Companhia das Lezírias are located in the heart of the protected area of the estuary of the Tejo river and totally surrounded by the forest, where a natural ecological balance prevails.
Companhia das Lezírias follows a viticulture with little intervention, leaving to nature the role of maintaining the
protected vineyards. With about 30% of old vines, the vineyards have Portuguese grape varieties occupying their
larger area.
The vineyard is located on the southern border of the Tejo region, just 2 km from the river, where it expands into a “lake” with about 20 km wide.
The sandy soils with some rolled stones and the 45 meters of altitude ensure the drainage of rainwater.
These are soils of low productive capacity. The Atlantic and also Mediterranean influence result in a
climate with large daily thermal amplitudes in which the days are hot and dry and the nights are cold and humid.
